What Kind of Copy Do You Need?
Minnesota death records come in certified and noncertified forms. Pick the type that fits your purpose before you apply.
Certified copies have the official state seal. They are required for legal and financial work such as settling estates, claiming insurance benefits, transferring property, or closing accounts. The first certified copy costs $13. Additional copies of the same record ordered at the same time are $6 each. Eligibility under Minn. Stat. 144.225 applies.
Noncertified copies are open to anyone and also cost $13. They contain the same information as certified copies but do not carry the state seal. Banks and courts will not accept them as proof of death. They are useful for genealogy, family research, and personal recordkeeping.
