Minnesota Death Records: What the MDH Provides

The Minnesota Department of Health maintains a centralized archive of death records for the entire state going back to 1908. If a death occurred anywhere in Minnesota after 1907, you can request a certified copy through MDH. This is especially useful if you're not sure which county handled the death, or if you need records from multiple counties.

MDH accepts requests by mail. You'll need to fill out an application, provide a copy of your ID, and include payment. The MDH page lists exactly what to include and how to send your request.

Go to the MDH death records page to download the application and learn how to submit a request to the state office.

Processing times at MDH can vary. Routine mail orders generally take several weeks. If you need a record quickly, check whether VitalChek offers faster processing for your specific request.

Who Can Get Pennington County Death Records

Minnesota law limits access to certified death records. Under Minnesota Statute 144.225, only people with a direct and tangible interest may receive a certified copy. This includes the surviving spouse, parents, adult children, siblings, and legal representatives such as attorneys or estate administrators. Government agencies and funeral directors can also get certified copies for official purposes.

People who don't qualify for a certified copy can still request a noncertified copy. Noncertified copies are stamped to show they are not for legal use. They are often used for genealogy or family research. The fee is the same as a certified copy: $13.

Privacy protections for death records are set under Minnesota Statute 13.10. This statute covers how government data, including vital records, is classified and who can access it. The county recorder and MDH follow these rules when reviewing requests.

Review the MDH eligibility page to check whether you qualify and what documents you need to prove your interest in the record.

Historical Pennington County Death Records and Research

For deaths that occurred before 1908, statewide registration hadn't started yet. Those records exist only at the county level, if they were recorded at all. Pennington County was established in 1910, so very early records in this area may be sparse or may fall under a different county's jurisdiction depending on when the county lines were drawn.

The Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul is the main resource for historical death records from across the state. Their collections include microfilm records, indexes, and other materials dating back to the 1870s and earlier. The MNHS reading room is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Their phone number is 651-259-3300.

Visit the MNHS death records guide to learn what historical records are available and how to access them for Pennington County and surrounding areas.

Local historical societies in Thief River Falls and Pennington County may also hold records, family papers, or obituary files that can fill in gaps left by formal registration systems. If you're researching a family that lived in the area for several generations, a local historical society visit can turn up materials that aren't available anywhere else. These kinds of collections aren't always indexed, so it's worth calling ahead to ask what they have before making the trip.
